Q: What can I do to improve the distance on my irons?
- Thanks, Tim Rose
To improve the distance with your irons, we need to first make sure you are striking the ball correctly. Do you take a divot after making contact with the ball? All iron shots should be made with a descending blow – clubhead striking the ball then the turf. Obviously the descending path into the ball is less noticeable with the long irons, producing a shallower divot than with the shorter irons. Next check your shaft flex – trial and error and knowing your swingspeed will help narrow down the 'correct shaft flex' for you. Another option to consider would be going to graphite shafts, which are generally lighter then, steel and thus might help with more clubhead speed. Also, have the lofts of your clubs checked. There is a considerable variance between manufacturers 'standard' lofts, and if you have an older set, you may have much weaker lofts than most of the modern sets.
